Day 5: Kalambaka back to Athens, Greece

9:38 am Pictures, Trips

When I first booked this trip WAY back in May, the number one thing on my list was to see Meteora, the famous Greek monasteries. Meteora means “suspended in air” and from the pictures I’d seen, they look really amazing. So we did all of days 1-4 leading up to this day, the highlight.

I’ll just say, they didn’t disappoint!

No pictures were allowed inside the churches, unfortunately, so pretend like you don’t see this one.

They were so amazing that I couldn’t resist bringing one picture back.

The whole place was a beautiful, peaceful sanctuary. I wished we had more time to spend hiking around and exploring every monastery, but we only had the morning.

After we’d worked up a hunger, we boarded the bus and headed back down to the town of Kalambaka. Our tour guide recommended a restaurant for real, down-home Grecian cooking, and we took her advice. And what good advice it was! We grabbed our plates and pointed to what we wanted and let them load us up.

All of it was homemade by Grandma.

Just thinking about the delicious food has my stomach grumbling again!

Then we were on the road again for the long, five-hour drive back to Athens. We took a couple of pit stops, hit some traffic, and got back to our hotel about 7:00. We grabbed a couple of our newfound tour friends and headed to a restaurant mom had read about in the newspaper for dinner.

Dinner was tasty, but we had to hurry to bed for our 5:00 wake-up call the next morning.
